I have a pb legend 406cd and just replaced the CMOS battery which was a CR2032. Now when it boots I press "F1" to enter setup to enter the day, time, etc... but the computer will not actually go into cmos? I have removed the battery, performed the clear CMOS operation and still nothing... If I don't press F1 to enter setup it says keyboard detected, mouse detected and then just stops.. no further activity or screen changes??? any ideas... help please... Keith Buchanan

Hate to answer a question with a question, but why were we changing the battery in the first place?
This info may give us some insight.

Battery was in system since 1996 and had started losing time... recently it stopped storing CMOS info if power was turned off for any length of time... thus, usually indicating the battery needs replaced...

also, if I unplug the hard drive from the ide cable the system will boot from floppy and i can get a prompt or go into cmos setup, however if i plug in the hard drive back into the ide cable the system hangs after counting ram and will not go any further...

we have not changed anything on the system as far as the jumpers, we have discontected the cdrom to see if just the hd will boot but now luck.. Keith Buchanan

I had a similar problem once. I had to set the cmos to defaults due to corruption and the system would eventually boot so far, then hang.
I had to took the jumper off the hard drive and it started working fine. It was the only drive on the ide cable.
It could be, with the system going back to defaults, that the hard drive configuration was set differently.
If you ahve to, disconnect the hdd and try going into the cmos and set the ide detection to auto as well.
I had an old PB 486 that always reset its self for default vaule to a setting that would not accept any hard drive larger than 500 mb. I was running a 1.7gb at the time.

Be wary of setting bios to detect drives if you are already having problems.
The settings are usually printed right on the drive itself, and can be manually entered to make sure they are right.
