Computer go to a blank screen after Win XP logo

I trying to repair a computer HP pavilion with an intel celeron 1200, It just goes to a blank screen with the pointer on the middle right after the win xp logo. it look simple to me he had nothing important on the computer so i just restore all the software from the restore disks, guess what? same problem change the hard drive (new), removed cards cdrom and modem and still does the same thing tried to install just win xp pro and nothing!! never had this problem before so i can use alittle.. no, a LOT of help.

My first thought is maybe the motherboard is bad but why would just boot but nothing else?

I forgot to mention I used a Win 98 boot disk and it does boot to command prompt.

Could be the video card or video drivers, where it is stopping is about the point where XP checks the card and loads the drivers. Can you boot into safe mode, if so try reloading the video card drivers in safe mode, if not, do you have another video card you can try, even an old PCI one will do to test as long as you are sure it is working ok Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.
