An old Windows 98 laptop has been able to send and receive email but is presently unable to open any web pages. The computer runs a slightly older version of a popular internet security software package. This problem occurs with both Internet Explorer and the ISP software. I have checked the machine for malware as best I can, without any positive results. Does anybody have any further ideas or suggestions on things to look for?

Thank you in advance for your help.

We need some more information before we can help.

How does the machine check for email if it uses Outlook express how is it configured?
Also has this always been the case or did it just start recently?

Any firewall that might blocking anything?

The first thing that comes to mind is that maybe there is a problem with the DNS. But because the Email program uses IP addresses it doesn't need them so it works fine.

Can you ping anything from the command prompt such as:
If you can't ping that, can you ping:
74.125.19.104. This would be google's IP address If you can ping that it pretty much narrows it down to a DNS issue.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

'slightly older version of a popular internet security software package'

if its norton or mcafee, could be your problem, check their configs allow web access!

is it just internet explorer that won't work (eg, try installing firefox - don't import ie settings - often works when ie doesn't).

The problem is fairly recent, within the last month or so. The computer is using Juno for internet access. The internet security software is Norton. It is still possible to send and receive email, but not to surf the web, either with Juno or Internet Explorer.

I ask again can you ping anything?

or firefox? or opera?

Have you checked Norton hasn't inadvertently blocked web content?/turned it off for 5 minutes or whatever.

if email working, then obviously you have got a connection - so it must be settings somewhere stopping the web.
