Compression problems

I have an HP 1537A dat drive, when I backup onto a 12/24Gb tape I generally get about 9-10Gb of data on it. Some of the files I backup are already compressed. ie disk images or winrar files.
I think that the hardware compression of the device could be a problem.
Anyone got any ideas how I can get more data on a tape?
