Complete Newbie to VPN

Okay so heres my situation

All of my users store all of their data on the server, I want them (my BOSS in particular) to be able to log in to our office network from home and access all of it's resourses including the software they use to track customers and what not.

Is a VPN the way to go, and exactly how do I go about setting one up, where do I even start? any links/advice is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance

Also, one if you want to set up XP or 2003 as the server. This link can really be applied to any OS since the setup really hasn't changed much at all since 2000.
