Could some one recommend a place where I could download a Compiler for C that is freeware.

Oh sorry the platform would be XP, but was also considering using the latest version of Ubuntu aswell, does that change much?

Well, Ubuntu (Linux distribution;) includes C compiler (so no problems at all?).
For Windows see gcc Windows distributions or try Dev-C++ IDE...
