Hi all, I have a recurring problem on several Compaq SFF EN's (450-500Mhz)..the problem is every now and then the pc will crash with a BSOD then display a screen full of dots. This is not virus behaviour as the machines run Norton (latest strains)..is it possible this is a firmware bug? suggestions welcome..

Initially I would suspect the video drivers, do you have the latest versions installed? You don't say which OS you are using, but assuming it's Win9x, also look for resource conflicts in Device Manager. To reinstall video drivers run setup.exe from the C:\Compaq\video subdirectory.

Good Luck.

All the pc's are set up via restore cd's on win 98SE..they are compaq supplied...no conflicts either irq or i/o etc..

It's not impossible that it's a firmware issue, if you got them from a Compaq reseller they should know. There is a known problem with nVidia card's and Win2K, but I'm not aware of it relating to Win98SE. Does the BSOD have any meaningful message, and is it always the same? Are they networked, does it relate to network traffic, retrieving emails, etc.

No..the bsods are different crashes of virtual device drivers...it doesn't happen that often and is almost impossible to replicate hence why I haven't found any sites that have had this problem. btw..once the pc's have been restored and configured (nt and novell client, tcp/ip / ipx) they are ghosted...
