Compaq 28.8 modem will not logon.

Model 7770 DT Compaq Armada laptop with 28.8 built in modem. We installed W2K on it. The modem now dials up fine and seems ok but the provider will not take the passoword or login name. On another desktop computer right beside it, the login works fine. I there a string or a driver that we need to add?

are you sure the modem dial up fine ? some of the modem would just "make dial sound" appears to you like its dialing, have the modem dial a regular phone number see if it rings

Some Compaq laptops that came with earlier OS' (like mine with Win98) had modems that would not work properly with Win2000. The Device Manager showed it as OK, but it wouldn't work. In particular, it was the Lucent WinModem. There's a warning on this on their web site. Newposter

Agree w/ Newposter. This sounds like a hardware compatiblity problem. Go to

http://www.microsoft.com

, not msn.com, and chekc to see if the modem is on the HCL(Harware Compatability List) for W2K. Check the web for a W2K driver to see if one is available.
