I have a database that appears to be somewhat unstable and I've tried to compact and repair it with no luck. It keeps erroring out and giving the check box option to close Access and reopen to repair the database. It's a viscious cycle that gets me no where and simple adds back-up files and DB files to the folder.

I've tried everything I can think of at this point (not overwriting the existing file, Access Help, etc.). Please tell me you can help me. Have fast approaching deadline on this database. The size is over 14mb, but I would bet it would be under 2mb once compacted. I'm certain it's never been done. You have to love those hand me down databases. Thanks!!

Have you tried importing everything into a new database? Decompile can sometimes be helpful, too.

Thanks for the responses! Actually I thought about the rebuilding of the database as I was posting this and posted it anyway. What I ran into was a certain "archive" table that seems to be corrupt. By not importing that table I have a new database.

I thought that was going to do itm but there is still some sort of corruption issues though. The non archive table of the archived table had no data in the import, which is fine, but something a miss in that table as well. I tried to copy all the data out of that table to place in the archive table and I recieved the same error as I do when trying to compact the original file.

As far as using that other database compacting utility, I'm not certain my network will allow me to download that without getting proper permission first, but thanks. I'll check into it.

CRAZY!

Found that there was one single record that was corrupt somehow and was not allowing it to compact. I did this basically through a process of elimination by cutting records from the main table to the achived table. Did it a few records at a time. Whenever I got the datasbase error, I tried a different set of records until I narrowed it down to the one. I could copy or cut the record to move it, only delete it. Once I did that I ran the Compact and Repair utility and now the DB is under 2mb as I figured.

Thanks!
