I have a Presario 4540 (K6-233) that constantly responds 'Operating System Not Found' on boot. Reads floppy for a while, then gives message. Hard drive presence means nothing. Going into Setup will display the first screen and then lock up - no cursor or mouse movement at all. Goes thru initial post, finding video card, processor, memory, hard drive, CDrom and then dies. Assuming motherboard or processor chip - can't boot to do flash update! Any ideas?

can you boot from a floppy and run
sys a: c:

can you boot from a floppy at all? guess not since you say cant boot to do a flash update. if you cant your right i bet it is memory or something.

what is the message hard drive presence... is that a message it shows you? a error? this may point to the hdd, and as a last resort you may have to fdisk it, to reload setup can you boot from a floppy diskette? this compaq may require the setup and diagnostics disks to be downloaded from compaq, check the downloads on thier site to see if any of the rompaqs apply to this machine. a lot of compaqs need these disks to be run first when relaoding the hdd if it comes down to that. also the setup can be run from the floppy, see if you can access it that way before you reload the hdd. I guess what I am saying is if you have tried everything and give up, you might want to try to WIPE the HDD clean because my guess is it may be related

if you cant boot from a floppy I would assume you most likely have a hardware problem with memory, cpu, or mb.

just trying to help some...

Thanks for reading my request and trying to help, fateswebb. I have removed the hard drive entirely with the same results. What I was saying is that I get the same error with and without the hard drive installed - no message number, just that the operating system was not found. I removed the Cache memory chip (same result). Reset CMOS (Same result). I have not swapped the memory or processor out yet. I did not try to boot from a CD - will try that tonite. I feel it is something weird that I haven'tg run into before - have seen power supplies stop the boot, but only before the hardware detection post. Strange stuff. Compaq just says there is a hardware problem (really??).
