Can anybody tell me if it is possible to assign the Comms Ports to a Specific hardware device.

I have an internal modem that installs to Comm 3, Comm 1&2 are listed in Modem Diagnostics but are empty. I know these 2 Ports are usually reserved for external devices such as rodents etc.

The reason i ask is that i am having problems with a new modem and its IRQ settings, and before i send it back to the supplier i would like to make certain that it is a fault with the unit rater than with the setting on the computer.

Thanks for taking the time

regards

brendan

No, but you can assign hardware to specific COM ports!

COM3 generally shares its IRQ with COM1, but most modern modem installation software takes that into account - and the modem itself should grab an IRQ, or a share of an IRQ through the Plug and Play manager(s).

What specific issues are you having, and what hardware/Operating system are you running?

Sometimes its possible to "force" a modem to another com port or irq if it has jumpers, but most modern modems do not, many of the ISA modems do however...If you have jumpers on your modem, i would look through your manual that came with it to see if you can change the com port addy

Check the last 3 or 4 topics in the Rockwell modems forums here. There are lots of posts on resolving this issue, both with jumpered modems and PnP modems. It's been covered in much detail, more than once.

If you're installing an internal modem, it's sometimes best to DISABLE COM 2 in the PC BIOS first (assuming you are not using the 2nd built-in serial port, and most people are not.) The new internal modem should now install itself on COM 2 (IRQ 3).
Even better, I like the modems that you can force to a COM port (via jumpers) as opposed to PNP. If done as above, they ALWAYS work!
