Commands to open serial port?

Help! Thanks! I'm writing an Access 2000 Point of Sale application and need to press a command button that will cause a cash drawer connected via a serial port to open. Can this be done in Access????

I've been using this for 2 years. I saved the command to open the cash register in a .bat file and used "Call Shell("c:\CashReg.bat", vbHide)" in the print command button event procedure to open it.
