I'm haveing trouble with the command prompt, cant change directories and so on. Any one have clue? I seem to remember a little program that took care of this, but cant come up witha name. Kelly

Kelly - is this an update to your thread thread779-643428? If so, can you give some feedback as to what you've donme since then/what's changed? If its new, background?

What is happening ,when I open the command prompt it shows like this C:\> and no command typed in works , the response is " " is not an internal or external command or batch file.

right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, and at the bottom Enviornment Variables.

In the lower box find the Path variable, and click Edit.

The beginning of that line should have at least: %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;

bcastner, that line checks out ok.exept for one capital S

The case should not matter, but all the %; and other doodads have to be right.

If the Path points to those three critical directories, a command instruction should be found and not return your error.

Copy and paste my above exactly and insert it as an edit of the Environment Variable Path.

If still no joy, Start, Run, sfc /Scannow

Your issue is worisome to me as many viruses can lead to this state of affairs. Perhaps running Trend Micro or Panda online antivirus checks from smah's FAQ would be a good idea: faq760-3862

Also, do a keyword search on the site (or click on my username) for "cool", select a match on thread subjects. I want you to do Cool Tip #4. It is possible your are attempting a command line object that is not available under XP.

I did the same a few weeks ago suggesting someone use DELTREE, and it is not an XP utility.

bcastner, done all you suggested, still no go.I am trying to slipstream SP1a with XP Proand all that is called for is changing directories and running .exe files. Kelly

Do you have any more luck working in Safe Mode?

Can you use the Command "CD .." to change to the Directory above your command prompt (C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly>)?

linney: Sake Mode ,same thing. The Command "CD D:
Gets
D:
C:\>
and nothing else.Kelly

Sorry, you lost me, I was wondering while at your command prompt (C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly>) and if you typed "CD ..", that's dot dot (like me) does it change your prompt to (C:\Documents and Settings>)?

Linney: Yes it does, but the end result is the same, from there I cant change directory. All od the Command prompts I get end with the symbol > and that seems to be the problem, or is it?
Example C:\>

">" is quite normal and nothing to worry about.

Try typing in "cd c:\Documents and Settings" (less quotes) at your (C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly>) prompt. If that changes your directory, use the full path after "cd c:\".

For example.

cd C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly\My Documents
