command prompt.. C:\mem, emm386

my config.sys contains himem.sys,dos=high,umb
and emm386.when i look in DOS at C:\mem or emm386
my upper & reserved =0,total/used/free.
largest free umb=0. i want to optimize,how
do i interpret? i have no umb, i need to
create this,how?

Probably you don't need any memory manager. Maybe, you can even delete config.sys or rename it for security reasons.

thankyou for reply,are there any memory performance
tips you can suggest that might not be obvious?
i use cache master pro,know about mem. bios timings,
virtual mem,the usual,want to know something about
placement in the memory ranges to optimize.

Panderson is correct. Those are old settings from DOS, and are not needed in Windows. You can remove them. The config.sys should probably be empty.

any computer running 95 and later will not defrag in dos, only 3.11 and before had that luxury as far as i know, my suggestion would be to boot system with startup disk and at the a:\ type scandisk c: /surface when this is complete boot to safe mode and then do a defrag once defrag has started stop it and click advance i believe and untic check drive for errors and then restart defrag
