Hi. I have just replaced my motherboard with an A15VG+. It all seems to work ok except comm1 and comm2 do not appear in the system>device manager. Also the ps2 socket is not being recognised. So I have no mouse and my external modem is not picked up. The parallel port works ok and so does the floppy which I understand is also controlled by an IO chip along with all of the above. Does anyone know if this is a motherboard fault or if it is all down to BIOS settings etc? Many thanks in advance. ASCII silly question, get a silly ANSI

Could be the ports are disabled in the BIOS. Check BIOS screen at bootup, press the <Pause> key if it whizzes by too quickly, and note if 3F8 and 2F8 are displayed. Also check in the BIOS for PS/2 possibly being disabled. Failing that, try clearing CMOS by moving jumper at JP2 from 1-2 to 2-3, and then back again. I've seen a lot of those TMC mobos, and never had a problem with serial ports on them.

Good luck!

Ok. The serial port was showing 'None' on boot up. Ive cleared the CMOS and now the correct addresses appear and windows can see the 2 COMM ports. Ive run Norton Diagnostics and the COMM ports pass all the tests. Can I safely presume from that that the mobo is ok and maybe its a ribbon or external connector that is at fault? Sounds like you've solved half the problems by clearing CMOS, as you say the correct addresses appear on the BIOS screen, and Windows now shows 'em. Have you tried connecting up the external modem? If you're sure you have the correct modem driver installed and it still doesn't work then you may have the wrong ribbon cables from mobo to serial connectors. (Are you in the U.K., as I've probably got several unused ones still floating around...). I'd use something like CHECKIT together with loopback plugs to confirm this.

Good luck!

Brilliant. I swapped the mobo to connector cable with another one and it worked!! Thanks for your help Roger. Hugely appreciated. ASCII silly question, get a silly ANSI
