I have upgraded to XP and cannot get both of my com ports to work. There was a conflict with my modem but I was able to sort that by changing the configuration.
My Com port 2 error is "can not start code 10". There is no resource conflict.
I hve tried uninstalling reinstalling both the com port and my modem.
Still the same problem.
I have checked the bios and the ports are enabled.
Any advice?
Phil

Here is the official Microsoft explanation of
Win32 Error code 10:

10 The environment is incorrect. ERROR_BAD_ENVIRONMENT

Have you tried moving to a better neighborhood ? (Better environment :)

Is this a FRESH / CLEAN install of XP ? Or, did you do an upgrade over an old OS ?

1st) I want to make sure that you are talking about the PHYSICAL SERIAL PORT(S), aka "comm ports." Is that correct ?

2nd) WHY DO YOU NEED THEM (the external serial ports) ?

3rd) If you do need TWO !, and your running real old hardware,,,,,, and your using Windows XP, I'm confused.
Why would you use 2001 software, and 1996 hardware together on the same computer ??

I would have to know what your answer to the above is, you may really have a good reason for wanting to use old hardware, but I would suggest, you just dump the old hardware, and buy some upgraded USB hardware.

LAST: If you don't need them, just disable the #2 SERIAL PORT in the BIOS, and don't sweat it.

We are talking serial ports. One is for my Palm V cradle and other will be for my Olympus C2500 camera.

Ok.
You didn't answer my question whether this was a CLEAN install of XP, or an update.

Possibly, the only way if you will know if your computer will be fully functional, is to wipe the hard drive clean and Install XP.

WHAT MODEM are you using ?

It would help if you would post more information on your system, and on your OS.

Atlon 700 system. Clean install on reformatted hard drive. Rockwell generic modem. Modem is using com port 3.
I think I will take your advice a switch to usb for my palm. The digital camera doesn't support usb so it can use the single serial port.

Hmm.
This is one of those times, when doing tech-support by remote (email) runs out of options.

I would physically have to have the computer to run further test, or you and I would spend an inordinate amount of time on this.

> Last: Try the MS KB (Microsof Knowledge Base)
