Hi all,

am looking at getting my CF (MX7) site hosted and was wondering what the difference is (security, performance etc) between hosts who use the enterprise version and those who run the standard version?

Those who run the enterprise version say its very important, but those who run professional edition dont see the problem, so i'm in need of a bit of impartial and knowledgeable advice!

any answers gratefully received

Thanks

Jim

In shared hosting if the host is using Standard edition, this means you are either going to have a lot of rectricted tags that you can't use or the server is basically insecure.

Enterprise allows sandboxes so you can use tags such as CFFILE, CFDIRECTORY, etc. Even CFMAIL is a security risk in Standard Edition on a shared server.

Basically, if you are going for a dedicated server, you would be fine with Standard unless you need some of the functionality that Enterprise offers. For shared hosting, if you wish to use the full benefit of Coldfusion (or the most possibly anyway) then you need a host that uses Enterprise.

Hope this helps

I should also mention. A lot of the hosts who run Standard Edition on a shared server will allow you to use most if not all tags/functions and they wil tell you there is no problem with this, however in this case they obviously do not know anything about Coldfusion and the security required to use it.

Hope this helps

Thanks Wullie, thats basically what i've been told, so it looks like i should go for one that uses enterprise edition, as yes, it is shared hosting.

Someone also told me that with shared running under standard edition there is only one cfserver and all the sites on that server have to compete and share it - obviously a problem if theres some busy sites on my rack - but not a problem under enterprise as each site has it's own - would you know if this is correct?

Thanks again

With either Enterprise or Standard you are still going to be sharing the server resources (It's a limitation of shared hosting) so a very busy site could in theory affect your site as well, but on a properly managed server the host would monitor for problems like this and take action either before or as soon as the busy site causes problems.

Enterprise holds up much better on a shared hosting server than Standard does. To be honest, there really isn't any reason to go for a host that offers Standard as you are only limiting your options. (Or giving everyone on the server access to your files)

Hope this helps
