Does anyone understand what this means? I was running diagnostics on an HP Vectra 800VL desktop, and all other tests passed. This error came with a message saying out of memory. All other tests, including advanced tests of the CPU, memory and drives passed. I have a bunch of these computers that I'm restoring to W2K, SP4 before donating them to a school, and want to be sure I don't give away one that needs something replaced. I have some spare parts, if I knew which to exchange. Thanks,
Jill

What diagnostic were you running when you got the error? What was the exact wording of the message?

Make sure you zero-fill the drives before OS install (don't just format), it's more secure when donating a PC. Props to you for taking the time & effort to recycle and help others.

I was running the HP diagnostics that come on the recovery disk. (and yes, I did partition and format, before running diagnostics and reinstalling the OS). The read-out of errors has 4 columns labeled Code Parameter 1, Parameter 2, Parameter 3. Below Code was 00FF, and below the others was 0, 0, 0. It doesn't seem to be causing any problem with the OS.

I've now found the error on three of the 8 computers. It shows up just after the 32-bit multiplication test, says Out of memory, then error 00FF. The computers all seem to run just fine.

Tearose,

Look at it like the "Check Engine" light...an annoyance that does not affect performance...maybe someday, but not at the moment.

Formatting the drive and zero-filling the drive are not the same. Even a full format leaves behind recoverable data. I am a little, well, careful (anal has a negative ring to it) about things like this.

I would run Darik's Boot & Nuke on all the PC's, get one PC setup and working and then clone that drive to the rest of the gang. It's probably too late for this step as I know you are busy but if there is ANY sensitive data on the drives this step should not be overlooked. At the very least, use Norton's Wipe Info or another utility that overwrites unused HD space.

Again, thanks for doing your part for the big blue marble.

Tony

Thanks, I'll locate those for future reference, but not use them for this project. There wouldn't have been sensitive data, because any of that is in a program we run from the server. And no one would have had personal ID stuff on their work computers. And since they'll probably end up in an elementary school classroom, not too much worry about the kind of hackers who would look for that stuff.
