Working in AI 9, I wanted to create a small icon for my website. Since the icon will be against a colored background, I wanted to avoid the white background "halo" on the icon.

When I use the "Save for Web" feature and save the file as a GIF file with "transparency" checked, I avoid the halo, but the icon looks rough and pixilated. On the other hand, when I use the "Export" feature to save the icon directly as a .JPG file, the icon looks smooth and sharp--but with a white halo! An as far as I can tell, I can't use the "Save for Web" feature to save the file as a .JPG file without the halo (i.e., transparency).

Any suggestions on how I can get a sharp image without a halo?

Thanks,

Bill

JPEG files don't support transparency, and GIF files only support one level of transparency (ie. a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque, so you can't get gradual transitions from one to the other). If your web page has a solid color background, you could create a box in Illustrator using that exact color, and place it behind your icon. Then, using 'Save for Web', don't bother with transparency at all.
