Lost a server and had to rebuild DNS. Used DNS Manager (NT 4 OS) to add back the domains, and then copied in records from a tape backup. Seems to be functioning ok except for a problem with our entry for proxy. We originally named our proxy server xyz_proxy. Later renamed it to proxy. This was a year ago, and entering a cname record of xyz_proxy for proxy allowed either name. Now (after the rebuild) the cname xyz_proxy does not function. Have tried deleting and reentering both the A and CNAME records, but users still can't resolve xyz_proxy. Why is this happening? Thanks.

If you are trying to connect via a share (\\xyz_proxy), you need to add the following registry key to PROXY machine, otherwise, the only thing that will pretty much answer is a ping:

HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

Add Value: OptionalNames REG_SZ String: "xyz_proxy"

If you make it a type REG_MULTI_SZ, you can add multiple aliases.

Use REGEDT32 cause it's easier to get a REG_MULTI_SZ type.

Thanks ReddLefty. Not sure of syntax you are saying I should use. Furthermore, I am just trying to be able to resolve the other name for proxy--it is in a profile for internet explorer lan settings. (Since profiles have been shut off, it does not go away.) Almost like the establishment of a cname record does nothing. Can ping proxy; connot ping it's alias xyz_proxy.

Tried adding the entry to the proxy server registry. It did nothing to solve my problem. Maybe syntax, or maybe not where I need to be to solve this.

Well.. if you want to see if it works, simply try to attach to a network share with the old name.

If it works, then the registry entry is good.. if not, I'll try it again:

HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

Add a REG_MULTI_SZ called "OptionalNames"

In the OptionalNames data field, enter "xyz_proxy" . (without the quotes).

Oh, and I forgot to tell you, it's not a CNAME that you need, it's an ALIAS record. You create an ALIAS DNS record for "xyz_proxy" to point at "proxy"

What does a pathping of the alias show you? I suspect it won't know who you are, but it's a start. I like to keep it simple. Good luck.
