Are the cmos batteries in HP Pavillion 6640c's hardwired or easily replaced.

I can't imagine a part with a finite life span like a battery being hard-wired into place...I've never seen it, but that does not mean it does not exist.

Open the case, and look for the shiny quarter-coin-sized battery, usually held in place by clips. The imprint on the battery will tell you what you need to buy.

wahula: you must be very young, back in the day of XT's and PS2's the batteries where hardwired in and sometimes you had to remove the motherboard to desolder it.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

wkrupi0146, many years ago, it wasn't uncommon for the cmos battery (usually a small rechargeable nicad pack) to be hard wired to the motherboard.
This has been replaced by a small 3.3volt lithium button battery 'CR2032 common to all new motherboards.
These usually last the useful life of the motherboard (4-5 years) but can be easily and cheaply be replaced if they fail sooner.

[rofl]

Just young in computer years...like dog years. Oldest living PC I knew was a K6 or the Pentium Pro, all had removable batteries....and ISA modems, with that weird coax output. I've even worn out a few CMOS batteries in the 11 years I've been fiddling with PCs- but never saw a soldered battery. As I noted in my post, that does not mean they do not (did not) exist. Being called "young" made my day...[smile] Thanks Acewarlock!

Soldered in Lithium batteries into the 486 years unless you had a forward thinking manufacturer.

Most put a 4 post offboard connector with a jumper to connect the onboard battery until it died, then you pulled the jumpre and put on an external battery with velcro to hold it in place on the case. Used the same 4 pin molex connector as the speakers.

But there were enough other kinds of batteries used that you made regular runs to the hardware/computer store.

There were also mounting blocks 4 AAs.
