when doing CM patching I know you download the patch from 'download software' and then to 'manage updates' to activate/unpack the patch.. when you look in the manage update screen there are about 5 different entries in there and some say unpacked cold/ activated/hot activated/cold.. how do I know what that means and whethere or not I need to 'deactivate' something before unpacking/activating something new?

If it says that it is a cold patch, the server will reboot, so it is service effecting. If it says hot patch, it suppose to NOT reboot the server and suppose to NOT be service effecting.

what about the status of a patch being active? I have more than one that say active. How do you know if something should be active or deactivated if you have a new patch/hotfix going in.

What version CM is it..? You normaly do not have 2 active unless you have an older version. Cut & paste the 2 that you have and we should be able to see if there valid.

Update ID Status Type
02.0.947.3-17534 unpacked cold
02.0.947.3-17579 unpacked cold
02.0.947.3-17684 unpacked cold
02.0.947.3-17853 activated hot
02.0.947.3-17903 activated hot
02.0.947.3-18020 activated cold

For the most part only kernel patches or patches that install linux rpms require or cause server reboots.

Hot patches should not drop calls or cause CM / Definty reboots

Cold patches do cause CM / Definity reboots

The readme files explain precautions and necessities like save trans and full backups prior.

The newer software loads cm5.2.1 and higher can even preserve calls during cold patch activation and upgrades

READ THE DOCUMENTATION or get someone that can to do your patches and upgrades or you may be looking for a new job.

I would de-activate this one

02.0.947.3-17853 activated hot

update_deactivate 02.0.947.3-17853

Do not use the tar.gz at the end.

S8300 Over-writable patch for Communication Manager 5.2

mojoputter - This is for you.
Be very careful giving advice.

See the readme on the support.avaya.com web site:

Over-writable patch 02.0.947.3-17853.tar.gz corrects a service outage condition that can occur on S8300B, S8300C and S8300D Servers running Communication Manager 5.2. S8300C Servers running Communication Manager 5.2 also require over-writable patch 02.0.947.3-17903.tar.gz. See PCN 1690P for more information

This patch is service affecting since a server reboot is required to fully activate the fix. It should be activated without de-activation or removal of any existing software update on the system. Once the patch has been activated, it should not be deactivated or removed.

I know the steps to download the patch, unpack and activate them.. I just don't know when and when not to deactivate other patches.

btrain08, this is why "Business Partners" exist. They have a lot of experience with patching CM, and will make a proper "backup" before activating or deactvating the patches.

I work for a Business Partner, and occasionly, applying or deactivating a patch compltely screws up CM (the patch fails to activate or deactivate, leaving the system in a hung state), to the point that we need to reload it from scratch and restore the backup. This is not something I would recomend for the casual administrator.

Get an experiences Business Partner to assist you, or pay AVAYA to apply (activate/deactivate) the patches for you. Of course they will charge you $600/hour.

I'm running 5.2 on my main site 8730's and all my remote LSP sites s8300's.

Mitch,
Trust me, I know the risks about taking it upon the customer self to do this. We do use business partners, but we were just sent for training to course 'Avaya Media Servers and Gateways' and was shown how to install all the gateways/server etc... We were briefly shown how to do IPSI updates and CM patches, but not in great depth. It would be nice to be able to know how to do this.

btrain08, there are instructions on how to apply patches, that is really not an issue. The issue is figuring out WHICH patches to apply, and which to deactivate and remove.

This is different with each version of CM, and also varies with even the version of the S8300 it's running on (S8300B/C/D sometims have different "hot" patches as well for each version, especially with CM5.2/CM5.2.1)

This is why I recomended you get some assistance. You can certainly follow the patching prcoeedures yourself, however, be prepared for the occasional reformating / reloading of a S8300/LSP, because it does happen, once in a while, even to "Business Partners", and even when precautions are taken, and even when they are experienced.

I recomend you read all of the patch notes, they usually have recomendations in them.

I have to disagree on that statement! I have patched 5.2 SP 2 and 3 and both times it didn't preserve anything... better schedule at least a 5 minute service outage.

S8300 LSP ?????? depending on the setup they shouldn't be service affecting. Maybe Read the Docs, try one S8300 first and see what happens.

Back in the Day if you didn't break it your weren't learning..........

in an LSP config patching the s8300, which is dormant shouldn't be an issue. Mitch, yes, I totally agree that assistance is def something to have and wouldn't be comfortable doing this w/o support. Reloading CM on an s8300 and redoin the config wizard isn't very difficult, but I'd surely never want to have to do that on my 8730's. I'm assuming in the release notes of a patch it will indicated what to leave active with that current patch or what to deactivate. I have a lab s8300/g700, which I can mess around with at any time. What I don't have is the license file for it or the auth file.

If you don't know how to do something, shouldn't you ask how you do it instead of saying it can't be done?

Take advantage of learning oportunities when presented and you may not drop calls the next time you activate a service pack or update.

It's all in the process.

Well from my experience never worked......even working with an Avaya SS this has been unsuccesful ......yes you can load and get it ready but when you activate a COLD patch the system does a reset system 4,reboot killing all services process ect, which will cause service interuption from my experience ......Someone working for Avaya for 35+ years, then yes this maybe something you can do easily.....but from the post it doesn't appear there's in depth knowledge of the Linux, CM, or Avaya Propreitary processes invovled! So Please point me in the right direction as this would make my life alot easier.
