Clock/Time problem

The clock ( system time ) wont keep the correct time.
It's ok as long as I leave the computer on.
However, if I shut the computer down at the end of the day,
then the next day the clock is 10 hours behind ie Reykjavik, Iceland time.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the clock itself because the minutes are always correct.
Is there perhaps some problem with the way Windows is polling the 'correct' time?
I've done all? the obvious things to solve this.

Do you have an application that is running at startup, that is setting the time or changing the time zone? Or another computer on the network, that has the wrong time set,and this machine thinks that other machine is the time server? Turn off the PC, disconnect the network cable and reboot, does the time still change?

Check you time zone settings, you may be set incorrectly

Make sure its not a failing BIOS battery causing a clock reset,or slow down.

Turn it on, and get into BIOS and check what time it reports.

Then turn it off and wait a few moments. Take note of ho long you waited, boot up again and go into BIOS and check the clock, if its correct, then you know its a Windows issue.

If its changed or delayed too, then its likely a battery issue.

If this is a desktop it should be easy to replace the BIOS battery. Not so much on a laptop.

I'd go with the battery theory too.

If you like experimenting, what happens if you advance the clock 10 hours before you go to bed, or what happens (the next day) if you run it all day with it 10 hours behind and switch off and go to bed, is it then 20 hours behind?

Are there any errors in the Event Viewer concerning the Windows Time Service?

In response to Linney, I did the following experiment.
(1) Set the clock 10 hrs ahead before I left for work.
(2) Came home from work and fired up W7-64, and ..
the clock is now 10 hrs behind real time.
(3) Also, the minute hand is still correct (as usual).
(4) This seems to indicate that the clock is at least
consistently wrong and that it is somehow getting
the wrong time from an externality, rather than say
a battery problem.
(5) Will keep you posted.

I use time zone(UTC+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney.
So, to me, it seems like the W7-64 clock is picking up
UTC and NOT adding the +10 offset.
My machine is an Apple iMac running an Intel i7 chip.
I have XP virtualized with VMWare Fusion (on the Mac).
The W7-64 is 'boot camped' against the iMac Leopard, and
therefore takes full control of the Mac.
The Leopard clock is fine.
The XP clock is fine.
I can't see that there is any interference coming from Leopard or XP.
But the W7-64 seems to want to set itself to UTC ( 0 offset ).
More later ...

Ah, I see that there was something that you forgot to mention!!

There are issues with timekeeping in VMWare, but nothing like the OP's reported problem.

I have found in multiboot machines, the system clock gets updated to double daylight saving time, when different OSs are started after the changeover date in spring.

If you choose an Additional Clock for Windows 7 via Data and Time/ Additional Clock, and set it for some other destination, and a second Additional Clock, and set that for Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, what do the two additional clocks do as far as keeping time accurately?

Again, if you load the Clock Gadget and set that clock for Australia, how accurate is the Gadget?

Do you have these two Registry entries?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\AUS Eastern Standard Time

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\AUS Eastern Standard Time

Run MsInfo32 by typing it in the Start Menu RUN box. On the opening page what information does it supply for Location? If it is incorrect you can change it via Control Panel/ Region and Language/ Location. Does it mention the correct Time Zone too?

What if you booted into Safe Mode, does the time still appear 10 hours out?
