I just installed a second hard drive as a backup and did all the necessary migration of files and adjusted registry keys to point to the new drives and now when trying to start Clip Art from either Word 2000, FP 2000, or just clicking on the cag.exe in the Artgalry folder in the MS Shared folder or even clicking on the cag.exe icon on the install disk - it starts and is on screen for less than a second and then quits.

The MS KB has one answer to the problem but it relates to Novell software and I do not use Novell.

I deleted and re-installed all of my Adobe software (I thought the add-ins from Acrobat, Pagemaker etc. may have been a problem) but the problem still exists.

Annoying to say the least. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

It sounds like CAG is looking for a file or location that has been moved, deleted or is no longer available to you. Since it can't access it, it doesn't bother loading anymore adn closes.

If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, make sure you have rights to all the areas that CAG needs. It could be that your security settings are preventing CAG from working. Also, there is an update to CAG in Microsoft's website. Even if you've already applied it, I would try applying it again. That may realign the settings so that it works again.

Unfortunately, I have found that, in cases like these (where my suggestions don't work), re-installing Office winds up being the only solution. Hope this helps. Michael

Hi Michael,
Thanks for taking the time!

I tried the update which is mainly for a security hole but it did nothing (and I tried again just to check after reading your post).

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Clip Gallery several times and nothing seems to realign things.

I have done the Repair for Office 2000 Pro (but not the reinstall as I have made other changes that I would hate to lose but you may have the only answer).

I am just about to delve back into the Registry to check some things I noted from my office computer to see if something is still out of whack with various 'calls'. I'll let you know.

I may just have to resort to the old "Insert\from file instead of using Clip Gallery.

Thanks again.

Michael,
AS you took the time to reply I thought I would let you know the problem is now solved.

Turns out (it seems) that when I downloaded the security patch for cag.exe from MS, it added code for Little Billy G's 'retroactive' Product Activation (my Office 2000 is of the first issue when Prod. Act. was not required) and just like if I install the Off 2000 SR 1 or 1a the retroactive PA is 'helpfully' installed and afterwords causes Off progs to do the same 'start/stop' dance, ClipArt was now doing the same even though I have not installed either of the SR's.

I noticed that after I uninstalled ClipArt much detritus remained in the registry and the ArtGalry and Clip Art folders remained in the MSShared folder.

So I unistalled Clip Gallery again, cleaned all mention of ClipArt, cag.exe and Artgalry out of the registry, cleared the MSShared folder of the mentioned folders, reinstalled ClipArt off the CD and all is now well with the world and ClipArt is plaing nice with Word and FP.

Thanks again for taking the time.
