I am setting up a server running SBS 2K3 and 6 local clients all XP Pro. Three of the clients connect OK to the router on the local side of the server but the other three fail to acquire an IP Address. I note that the TCP/IP configuration of the 3 clients that successfully connect include node type Hybrid whereas the three that fail have node type either Broadcasting or Mixed. Is this an issue and if so, how do I correct it?

Thanks in anticipation.

Describe the network toplogy and router/switch types.
If connecting to a switch that is running STP, the DHCP request may time out before STP is done negotiating the link to determine blocked ports, usually about 50 seconds.
Do the failed nodes connect fine with a static IP? Also, do the nodes that fail get the APIPA of 169.254.x.x?

What happens when you do an IP config? do they have APIPA addresses ( if so that means that they either can't see the DHCP broadcasts.

You mention a router, are these machines on the other side of the router? if so do you have a BootP or DHCP relay agent configured on the router to allow DHCP broadcasts to be directed to the DHCP server on the otherside?

I think that we really need to see what kind of information is returned on the IPConfig command as well as knowing whether they are on a different network segment due to the router.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.
