Hi All,

We have a small SCO 5 server running “On Staff” that has decided to no longer let anyone telnet in to it anymore, except for root (root is the only one that can log in). We can ping and FTP just fine but when you login into the server as a client through Telnet, from inside the LAN or even directly in the server, as soon as you enter your password you get dropped off the server.
I’m hoping someone here has the answer or at least some good ideas.

Thanks, Paul

You probably have an application which is failing to run (for whatever reason).
Go to the home directory of a sample user and modify their .profile to prevent it from launching the application. Then, log in as that user (which should just drop you to a "$" prompt. Try to run the application from there. If it fails, you will probably see more information (such as "file not found" or a licensing issue). There are lots of possibilities.

If you are unfamiliar with using "vi" to modify their .profile script, you should get similar results by renaming it like so:
# cd /usr/user1 (or whatever is appropriate)
# mv .profile profile.hide
