Clients cannot log on in online mode

When members of my domain log on they are told that they are in offline mode. When it says the server is ready to sync it fails. When they log off it does not sync and the roaming profile cannot be updated. I have tried rebooting the server and the client but this will not work.
Any ideas welcome
