Hi all... Little problem here with licensing.

My situation. Client has NT4 terminal server running metaframe 1.8 for said server. Now he wants to upgrade to windows 2000. The version he has will not install on 2000 server (which I didn't know).

I have an eval copy of metaframe 1.8 for 2000. I've installed that on a new 2000 terminal server and added his licenses. The server took the license, recognized a 15 license with no problems.

Haven't tried to activate the server yet, don't know the user/pass for the activation website.

My problem is this. Is this legal? Anybody know about the licensing for 1.8? Can you just change software and use the licenses? or will it cost big bucks for the software? He doesn't want to go up to XP yet, and from what I know you can't buy 1.8 anymore.

Can't find anything on the citrix.com site to discuss this at all.

Thanks.

Under XP I am sure, but not 100% on 1.8, so I'll post here, but with 'grain of salt'.

Under XP, licenses are client-only, you don't license the servers. you can have 1 server or 100 - licenses same price.

I'm pretty sure that the 1.8 licenses needed both Server & client, so you could have some problems. That said, being as it's still 1.8 (even tho a diff OS), Citrix may allow it.

Citrix actually have a dedicated licensing dept (because it's THAT convoluded), so give them a call and make sure for all involved.

Cheers,
Sam

I don't think this would be considered legal. You have a license for 1.8 on TSE and what you want is a 1.8 license for win2k. I think the upgrade is free, but given that you will need a pucker copy of 1.8 for Win2K as the eval is unlikley to be a supported build.
Your best bet would be to get them to upgrade to XP.

I upgraded our NT4 TSE to Win2000Server and needed to buy a "MetaFrame 1.8 TSE to MetaFrame 1.8 Windows 2000 Migration English" Pack...

citrix has been contacted already, the wheels are very slow to turn :( Apparently citrix doesn't sell the 1.8 upgrade anymore and everything is going to XP.

Should get interesting, cost is the major issue here.

ok, problem solved... they bought metaframe xps. Price wasn't too bad, $3500 CDN dollars...

Now if I can just get microsoft to give me a straight answer on the 2000 server licensing...

Oh well, thanks for the replies.

Hmm a straight answer. Tell us all if you get one.
Here is my understanding.

For all clients not XP or Win2K then you will need a TS-CAL.

For all users you will need a Win2KCal.

You will need a TS Cal license server (ordinary win2K will do) If in AD then will require to be on a DC).

Each client will get issued with a license when they connect for the first time. This will get recycled in 30 days if not used in between.

Microsoft was difficult to say the least, I wish they would have people on the phone that at least know the licensing scheme... This client bought 2000 enterprise, doesn't need cd keys. This kid at microsoft argured with me that there should be 3 keys and effectively told me I needed a total of 144 licences + 21 terminal server cals and they should be split across all 3 servers... grrr. I should file a complaint with microsoft, tho I doubt it would do any good.

The client bought 52 server cals, 21 TS cals and 15 citrix cals for presentation XP. That's more than they need. The pdc is the licensing server running per server.

For those of you who buy the newest citrix, I ran into a little issue with the licensing. You'll now need to activate a "fullfilment" licence in order for the server to work, not just the server and connection cals.

Thanks for the responses.
