Hi all,

We bought a 2950 24-port. I'm quiet a newbie in Cisco, trying to install it. It came with a blue cable. What is that blue cable for : console control by telnet (is there somewhere a good tutorial on how to use telnet with Cisco switches btw ?) ? Network cable for connection ? It hasn't been configured yet, so I suppose there's some firmware settings...can anyone tell me what is the default port for cascading ? I found a user guide on Cisco site, but it's not very helpful.

Any help and/or tips welcome

Thanks!

The blue cable is for console control on a serial port which parameters are given in the hardware installation guide (9600 bps, ...); you use it by example on a PC with Hyperterminal software.
When you first connect on the console you are invited to reply some configuration parameters, but you can abort (CTRL +C) this process and use default settings; you can also use tftp to transfer a already written config text in the switch (or copy/paste with hyperterminal).
With Fast Ethernet, I think there's no default port for cascading; you must use a cross-cable in any port.
With Gigastack, you can use any of the 2 ports and any of the 2 plugs with the yellow cable; the only restriction I know is concerning loops and you must look at the Gigastack Installation Guide.
