Cisco IOS update

Need help with a router. I am trying to upgrade the IOS on my Cisco 3620 router. I have downloaded the 12.6 version and it is saved on my tftp server as .bin file. Do I need to convert this .bin file into another format if so how do i do that so i can copy the IOS onto the router?

No, just make sure you have enough Flash & DRAM to store/run he image on the router. You copy it using 'copy tftp flash' command from the router, make sure you have IP connectivity between the PC and the TFTP server. If you have other images on the routers flash you will need to set the boot parameter as well - 'boot system flash flash:software.bin'

I am getting a connection reset by remote site error on my tftp server. I can ping the router & the router can ping my tftp server. Do you know what is causing this error?

Are you using Cisco Tftp server? If you are you might try Solar Winds free Tftp server at the following sight:

Simple questions first:
Is the tftp server running?
What tftp server are you using?
Have you allowed the tftp server to download?

I am using SolarWinds TFTP server. It is running and set to allow send and receive.

There are a few different things that may cause you problems. First of all are you on the same lan as the router you are trying to flash? Try issuing the "Term Mon" command to receive terminal messages and try again. See if any errors display when it times out.

I deleted the current flash on the router & now I'm in an rommon > prompt. I am going to try and copy the new flash using the xmodem method via hyperterminal. We'll see how this goes.

When you get your software to load visit the following sight on how to tftp from rommon mode. This will save hours depending on size of file as you can send it ethernet (fast) instead of xmodem (slow).

Also, I always thought Cisco provided IP only software at no charge. You might email them and see if it is available.

Doudle check the config register...normal setting is 0x2102.
Check flash for multiple images...might be more than one file.

the file finally finished loading but now it tells me the 'flash sector will not erase...aborting'?

Is your flash card one partition or multiple partitions. If more than one partition is present might need to delete and format memory as one partition. Other possibility is that flash card is bad.

One more thing.....

On end of flash card is write protect switch.......might be enabled.
