I was wondering if someone could recommend a few books, or reference materials for setting up a Cisco switch. I currently know very little about the configuration of a switch, and I only know very basic commands. I am not necessarily looking for a "certification track" book I just need a good book to teach me as much as possible. I've heard good things about books by Todd Lammle. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We are currently using a Catalyst 5509 with seven 24 port blades. The switch was setup by someone else, however that person is no longer with us and the responsibility now falls on my shoulders. This will be a great trial by fire learning experience, I just don't want to disappoint.

Thanks for your help.

Check out the FAQ section of this forum. Good material...your Cat5500 is a set based switch so please keep that in mind when reading the FAQs.

Cisco produce a good manual that is well worth the money

"Cisco Field Manual : Catalyst Switch Configuration" by David Hucaby & Steve McQuerry - ISBN 1-58705-043-9

On a more technical level the Cisco LAN Switching CCIE manual has a lot of very good stuff relating to Catalyst switch configuration, this is a more expensive book but I've found it worthwhile as it fleshes out the concepts in the Field Manual.
