Cisco 851 basic connection setup

Hi everybody,
I need some serious advice regarding what I should do.
My plan is to use my computer to host a small business website. I have cable modem and linksys d-link router. I found a way to set it up (with help of a few website tutorials) for routing traffic to my website, but my isp provider is blocking port 80 (videotron canada) so noone outside local network was able to see my website.
Few days ago I called my ISP and signed up for "business" plan and now I have one static ip and all ports unblocked, but I also got the Cisco 851 (not wireless) router.
The installation guy came and plugged cables from my linksys router into the cisco router, gave me the SDM Cd, said everything was ok(since the litle green light is on) and left after telling me to install from the cd. There was no internet connectivity at this point with cisco router.
The Cd instllation did no go as planned since on the step 2 (after plugging everything as instructed and selecting model number) and clicking on'Launch Cisco SDM Express' button I get a 404 page for the

LAN Connection is showing 'limited or no connectivity' and I am unable to connect to router or internet from my computer (I do not and have serial cable, just ethernet cables).
The cable modem and linksys router are still fully functional and I am currently using those.
I have windows xp professional
2100mhz dual amd processor
1 gig of ram
200 gig free space on hd

I managed to install cisco SDM express on my pc and jdk but that is as far I got.
Should I just put the cisco 851 on the shelf and see if the linksys setup works now (with ports unblocked) or does cisco 851 do things I desperately need to run my website?

Well since your public IP address isn't applied directly to a single computer at a BARE MINIMUM all you need to do is forward port 80 to your web server's internal IP address, which just about any router should be able to do.

If you are going to make this IP address(or associated domain name) public knowledge though you really would want to look at getting someone to set the cisco up properly, with the appropriate feature set.

It's strange that you can't get into the Cisco box via SDM.These router come's out of the factory SDM ready.Make sure you are pluging the cable into the LAN interface.If I remember correctly SDM installs a java applet so this shouldn't be the problem.
If all of the above fails,try to get a console cable,and we will get the router up and running from command line.
Your linksys should be able to forward port 80 without a problem.But you have already bought the Cisco,so it be would be a shame to put it on the shelf.

Norton was blocking me at one time from accessing a router via SDM.

ya norton could do it (any firewall)
also if your settings are restricting active x in your browser that could stop it running... but i think the main problem is that you were not getting an ip from the router ... so im not sure how SDM would find it anyways..

i assume you plugged your pc into one of the wan fast ethernet ports with your pc set to dynamically obtain its addressing from the router???

you may want to right click on your nic and do a "repair"
just to be sure.. and make sure youve given the cisco a minute or so to be sure it has finished booting up. it will take a little longer then your linksys to be ready to hand you pc an ip address...

i dont know why the videotron guy didn't drop you off a console cable.. it should have been part of the kit that he brought to your site...

I am planing to make this domain public, so i guess I will have to setup the cisco router.

It is ready for action.
I do not have Norton but Zone Alarm security suite and have temporarily disabled it, and the Widows firewall, in an effort to avoid conflicts.
I have installed SDM and java but only on my pc as there was no connection to the router.
I have plugged the power cord in and turned power switch to on position, pluged in yellow cable into port 0 on the back of the router. Turned on the pc and inserted the cd. Clicked on "first time router setup", Internet explorer asks, and I allow the activeX component to run during CD installation, then it allows me to select model number and upon clicking on on'Launch Cisco SDM Express' button I get a 404 page for the

Repair connection feature did not help.

ok well its looking for your router to be at 10.10.10.1

so when you do a ipconfig.. what is the ip address on your nic facing the router?

i assume the yellow cable is a straight patch cable and not a crossover right?

The cable is a "4 pairs patch cable"
ipconfig says that "autoconfiguration ip address is 169.254.69.165"

well i guess you could manually assign 10.10.10.2 255.255.255.0

on that interface and then see if you have connectivity..
so videotron didn't configure anything on this router?
they just plopped it down on your lap?
i would think that they would have put your static ip into it and then locked it down..

have you called them to see if they preconfigured it with anything? the installer may not know exactly what he was doing.. hes probably a res guy..

I have entered 10.10.10 2 into ip and 255.255.255.0 into tcp ip settings for lan connection and the "limited or no connectivity yellow triangle dissapeared. I guess its a good sign.
(after initial frustration for not being able to get this up and running i have pressed the "reset" button on the bac of the unit)
Have I screwed it up or is this still fixable?

at this point ide say you will have to connect via that nice new console cable you just made...
user hyperterminal or some other client and connect to the router

start with 9600 baud 8 bit no parity

the username and password should be cisco

from there do a sho run

and paste it in here and we can go from there.

also i just pulled a brand new 1841 out of the box..
by default it is configured with

10.10.10.1 255.255.255.248 on the fa0/0 interface.

username/password: cisco

and there is no dhcp configured..

So...
I used the console cable and Hyperterminal to connect.
It connected and gave me the VIDEOTRON LTEE acess forbiden
enter password lines.
Password cisco did not work
Since it does seem to be preconfigured I called their support line and got my static ip, subnet and gateway address from them (they forgot to send me an e-mail when I signed up).
The (suprisingly?) competent sounding rep told me that the cisco box is "plug and play", but I needed to configure my linksys with static ip. I tried this (several times) and everything looks ok but still not able to get trough to tehe inernet. I also tried it without the linksys (cable modem>cysco>network card) by punching the provided ip subnet and gataway numbers in the appropriate boxes in my lan settings. There is bidirectional traffic in both send and receive fields but no internet access.
What am I missing?

did they give you dns settings as well?
can you ping your gateway address?

If you have a console cable, or can acquire one, I can walk you through step-by-step and get the thing configured for you. I will need info from the LinkSys first, like authentication method (PPPoE, I would think), what kind of line encapsulation, etc.

videotron is a cable provider.. so their config will be pretty basic in that router..

when you hook the crossover cable between the cisco and your linksys wan port you should be able to ping through your linksys to their ip adress...

if that doesnt work i would get them on the line and have them troubleshoot in realtime with you...

You need to perform password recovery on the router...
First, connect again with HyperTerminal, and turn the router off, then back on. After about 10 seconds, initiate a break (usually either shift-pause/break or ctrl-break), and you should see this...

When the router boots again, it boots the default config, with no passwords...when it comes all the way up, answer no to the first question, and yes to the second question. Then you will see this...

then you will need to make a new secret password, since this is always encrypted with an MD5 hash (one-way, uncrackable)...so...

I usually make the line con 0 (console) and line vty 0 4 (virtual-terminal, for telnet) passwords the same, but that's just me...

Make sure the IP address you set is the same subnet as the computer that has SDM loaded on it. You can just double-click the network icon at the bottom right of the computer screen, go to properties, then double-click tcp/ip properties, and manually enter in an IP address like 192.168.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and the gateway as 192.168.1.1.
