Can you use a Cisco 7940 or 7960 on a BCM? Can you load the latest Nortel firmware from the BCM into the Cisco 7940/7960 and make it work? I know you can make a Cisco phone work on an Avaya SIP platform on the larger CS2100 and CS1000, but I am wondering if you will be able to make the 7940 work on a Unistim platform once the firmware is loaded? I guess I can always try once I get the phone, but I want to see if anyone else has tried it?

Cisco phone only support SCCP ("Skinny") and SIP. BCM only supports UNIStim. Phone firmware is specialized for the actual hardware (phone) is it loaded on so Cisco firmware will not load on Nortel/Avaya phones or vice-versa.

Bottom-line. What you are asking will not work.

You can load SIP firmware into Nortel IP phones and have them work on any system that supports SIP phones (works the other way around too) but you lose all the features of the sets that Nortel's proprietary Unistim firmware provides.

Keeping in mind the cost of a Nortel IP phone, I can't see why anyone would bother. There are SIP phones out there that are a lot cheaper and would work exactly the same way.

You would have the same issue with a Cisco SIP set. Why would anyone buy them only to be restricted to features provided by other sets at half the price.

If you look in the BCM (R5 and up anyway) under Resources>Application Resources, right at the bottom, there is an entry called Other SIP Sets. It's right below Nortel SIP Sets. looks like it needs to be licensed but I'm not sure.

Good Luck with it. Let us know if you get it working.

Telcodog,

I think those options are only for when converted to SRG.

Anyways, I totally agree with the above posts.

I talked to some of my BCM contacts and we have come to the conclusion that a Cisco phone cannot be used on a BCM under any means.

Oh and for all of you Nortel fans out there, I like the styling of the 1100 series phones much better than the Cisco phones anyways.
