I have a Cisco 5500 series router and I'm trying to route IPs from other locations to it. is it possible to use BGP routing with a 5500, with a module or without?

Thanks

If you have an RSM card you should be able to use BGP , OSPF or any other routing protocol , an rsm is basically a router on card .

will this work at edge routing or core routing?

The 5500 switch will do BGP4 if you use a RSM (Route Switch Module). However, core routing shouldn't use BGP. :)
