To those of you who might have access to a 4500M+ router, could you do me a favor and post what IOS version you have, and alos if you are able to configure IPX and Appletalk on the router.
I bought the router to be the backbone of my home lab, and I'm running IOS ver. 12.2.10, but I also have 12.1.14 and neither of them can configure IPX or Appletalk. Really right now all I want is IPX since I am studying for CCNA right now. But if all goes well, then I want ot continue through the ranks and I will need Appletalk sooner or later. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. And PLEASE let me know what IOS version you are using if you have access to IPX and Appletalk.

Thanks,
burke

You probably have an IP only version of the IOS.. what is the exact filename of the IOS? there are several sets of letters for the middle group. This tells what the IOS can do.. IP only, IP/IPX, IP/IPX/IBM, Enterprise and so on..

You can find out what you have by cuting and pasting in the filename to the CCO search at cisco.

The file names I have are:
c4500-is-mz.121-14.bin
c4500-is-mz.122-10.bin

Thanks for your help MikeS.

The 4500-is... the 'is' stands for extended IP only. No IPX, appletalk etc. This is the overall feature set:
IP subset (SNMP, IP, Bridging, WAN, Remote Node, Terminal Services)

You need c4500-d-mz or better. Notice the 'd' replaces the 'is'. This is IP/IPX/IBM.

Feature set:
Desktop subset (SNMP, IP, Bridging, WAN, Remote Node, Terminal Services, IPX, AppleTalk, ARAP) (11.2 - DECnet)

The best choise is c4500-js-mz which is the Enterprise version which also does virtually everything.

enterprise subset (formerly BPX, includes protocol translation) *** not used until 10.3 ***

For all the gory details, see this paper.
