I am trying to confugure a new cisco 3825 12.4 and a cisco 6509. I have connected them together with a straight thru cable, they are linking, if I do a cdp neigh I can see each other but for some reason I cannot telnet or ping from one to the other. I created a vlan in the switch and added the port where the router is connected to it in the same vlan both devices are in the same subnet 10.16.11.x but still can't talk. Am I missing something?

Do a show vlan in 6509 and make sure the vlan you think you created shows active and the port shows up in that vlan , otherwise it has to ping it is a directly attached device. Is the 6509 native or hybrid ?

ok the vlan was active, and the port assigned to the right vlan. I added a "ip classless" to the configuration and it works now. I still have some issues, there is 3 vlans configured, and a dell switch connected to one port on the 6509 assigned to a vlan. Now from the console port I can ping anything within the 6509 as well as anything from the Dell switch, if I try to ping from a device plugged directly to the 6509 I can ping all the vlan addresses (gateways) and I can ping a Cisco Pix connected to the Dell switch but I cannot ping any other devices on that dell Switch neither can I get on internet. The device I am using has an IP of 10.12.10.252 and the gateway is 10.12.10.195 which is the VLAN interface address, the PIX connected to the Dell Switch has an IP of 10.12.10.1

Any ideas?

OK guys problem solved. It actually was a vlan problem not being carried out to the other switches. Thank you for your help.
