Hello There,

I have a central cisco 3640 running two leased lines to two 1600 remote cisco routers.

Could anyone suggest what would be best for a form of redundancy for this setup?

I beleive that the 1600 would only support the one serial WIC that they already have but could i have a possible backup through another router say a seperate ADSL router?

Or is my best best to replace the 1600 routers with say an 1803 adsl router. But if this was the case what would i need to do to the 3640?

Any help would be greatly appreiated.

Kind Regards,

Grasscutter.

An 1803 would be an expensive move. Why not consider a router like a 2621 that has two fast ethernet ports built in, two wic slots, and one module slot. This router would be a great replacement for the 1600 series and would have plenty of expansion possibilities. For the 3640 it depends on what type of additional service you go with as to what wic or module to add to it. If you go with dsl then you could do it fairly cheap by adding ethernet ports to the 3640 and with the use of a simple dsl modem (not dsl router) you then setup the router for ppp over ethernet.

Also there are different models of the 1600 series. The 1601 for example has one 10-base-t half duplex ethernet port and one built in serial port. It has a wic slot that would support a second serial or t1 wic.
