Cisco 3560 POE and Cisco 1131AG WAP

So, I'm having a weird problem.

I have a 3560 PoE switch.

I have a 1131AG access point.

I want the switch to power on the access point.

"show power inline" shows all is well

The access point turns on.

BUT, I cannot ping it.

I plug in the power supply and the problem goes away.

Any ideas?

Are you sure the AP turns on ? If it was actually on you should at least see it via cdp neighbor . My guess it is never really powering on .

On a per-port basis, you can control whether or not a Catalyst 3560 PoE port automatically provides power when an IP phone or an access point is connected. The device manager and the CLI provide two PoE settings for each 10/100 or 10/100/1000 PoE port: Auto and Never.

When you select the Auto setting, the port provides power only if a valid powered device, such as an IEEE 802.3af-compliant powered device, a Cisco pre-standard IP phone, or a Cisco pre-standard Cisco access point, is connected to it. The Auto setting is the default. However, when you select the Never setting, the port does not provide power even if a Cisco IP phone or an access point is connected to it.

Cisco enhanced power negotiation allows some powered devices, such as the Cisco 7970G IP Phone, to operate in high-power mode on Catalyst 3560 PoE switches. The powered device and the switch negotiate through

power-negotiation Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) messages for an agreed-upon power-consumption level. The negotiation allows a high-power Cisco powered device that consumes more than 7 W to operate at its highest power mode. The powered device first boots up in low-power mode, consumes less than 7 W, and negotiates to obtain enough power to operate in high-power mode. The device changes to high-power mode only when it receives confirmation from the switch. High-power devices can operate in low-power mode on switches that do not support power-negotiation CDP.
 
Yes, it's powering on. I plug the flop cable in and watch it complete post and power on. I can do anything I want in IOS via console.

Nothing on cdp neighbor... as soon as I plug in the power supply, count to 10, and all is well... unplug power supply, and back to not working

The way I resolved it was setting that ports inline power to "never" and then using a power injector instead.

I tried all 10 1131AG access points I had with all 48 switchports... 480 combinations and it took 3 days... same results.

I've never used the 1131 APs before... always used the 1120 series... guess I learned my lesson.

 
The only other thing to check is to make sure cdp is on on both the switch and AP as i think they use cdp to negotiate the power settings .
 
Yup, CDP is on on both switch and AP

when using power injector, show cdp neighbor has the proper results

when using PoE, cdp neighbor shows nothing, and no ip connectivity, etc.

I've decided to just deal with injectors.

I have run into a similar situation only with POE using 7960s and 7970s. When the user plugged in their 7960 there was no issues, powered on, talked to CCM , everything was good. When we decided to throw some 7970s out there, the POE switches did not provide enough power per switchport to have those nice color screens light up. They sounded like they were powering up, but never made it past the POST process. We did a little research and thats what we found out...
 
I heard about that with the 7970s.

Ours do post though. I watch it via the console cable.

that's the part that's frustrating.

I even tried the documented commands by using the mac address of the switchport hoping that some sort of negotiation of power would take place. No dice.

Bug maybe?

I'm running IOS 12.2 25 SEB4... maybe I should try a newer ED version of IOS...
