Hello

i have been asked a question at work about 2600 IOS which is as follows

customer has got 2 2650xm routers 1 is running XM IOS and the other is not.

they need to do some changes soon and are thinking about using the XM IOS on a 2611 would this IOS run just for basic ip use ie mainly ip routing between vlans.

the 2611 is stocked with both ram and flash

thanks

I have just looked on CCO and I am not sure you have the right information. Cisco 2650XM routers run IOS; there are various feature sets available from IP Only through to Advanced Enterprise Services with SNA. I therefore assume you just have different feature sets installed on each router (as well as possibly a different version - 12.2x or 12.3x etc).
Do you know the version numbers and possibly the file names of the IOS each router is running?

hello

they do have two levels of IOS the one they want to run on the 2611 is

c2600xm-is-mz.12.2.13.t1.bin

hope this helps

Having just re-read you post I assume you have 3 routers - two 2650XM's and a 2611? If this is the case then the IOS for the 2651XM is compatible with the 2611 based on the filenames I have just read on CCO. The filename you list however I can't find on CCO - I cannot find any 2600 series IOS with 'xm' in the filename. The nearest I can find is IP Only 12.2(13)T16 (c2600-i-mz.122-13.T16.bin). The same filename is listed for both the 2650XM and the 2610-2613 and requires 32MB DRAM and 8MB Flash. I would however recommend a later release - the latest T Train of 12.2 is 12.2(15)T17. If you don't need the features in the T train then either go for a GD release of 12.2. 12.3 has also gone GD - 12.3(18) or 12.3(19) - The IP Only Release requires the same memory so can be installed without any issues.

You do however also mention '...routing between vlans...' if you are using 802.1q trunk encapsulation on the routers FastEthernet interface then you will need at least the IP Plus feature set. This requires a license and more memory (64 DRAM for 12.2x).

glennmitel,

From what I understand about Cisco IOS they are platform specific - there is a difference between a 2611 and a 2650xm - the IOS for the 2611 would be like c2600-is-mz.12.2.13 etc.

You don't have a Smartnet/CCO account for the routers?

Hope this helps!

hello

thanks for all your help with this

just spoke to the customer and the reason they want to use that IOS is so that they can trial a CME in the office what IOS and CME would work best

thanks again

CiscoGuy33 - if you look on CCO for software for both the 2650XM and the 2611 you will see that they share the same filenames. This means although they are different platforms they run the same IOS code.
I have had a look through various versions and feature sets and it looks like all the IOS feature sets are compatible between the 2651XM and the 2611. You will however run into memory restrictions with the 2611 since it supports a maximum of 64MB DRAM and 16MB Flash whereas the 2651XM supports 256MB DRAM and 48MB Flash.

Andy,

Thanks!

I was going by the file (c2600xm-is-mz.12.2.13.t1.bin) he was looking for, I have 2610s and 2611s and I knew the IOS for them was c2600-is- yadda yadda yadda!

When he put that he had c2600xm-is....... I just figured the new 2600xms had changed enough for their own IOS.

Thanks again!
