Can a Cisco 2522 be used as a terminal server to access other router via their console ports?

I have one in a lab setup and would like to use the sync/async ports to access other routers via their console ports, but I'm not sure if this is possible.

Thanks

techkiwi,
What you are trying to do is "reverse telnet". you can do this on any router via the AUX port, but the majority of routers only have one AUX port, hence you can only establish one reverse telnet session at a time.

For multiple reverse telnet sessions, you'll need a cisco 2509-2512 series. You'll also need the octacal cable for the aysnc port which splits into 8 individual RJ45 connections for your console access. The 2509 supports 8 aysnc connections for reverse telnet, the 2511/12 supports 16.

The 2522 series has 8 x DB60 serial ports which are ideal for your Frame-relay switch in your lab. You'll need the DB60 DCE-DTE cables for each router which participates in the frame-relay cloud.

Thanks for the info JimmyZ.

Is it possible on this particular model to use the sync/async serial ports instead of the AUX port, thereby being able to establish multiple Reverse Telnet sessions?

Otherwise, yeah I might follow your suggestion and use it as a Frame-Relay switch. Currently I'm using an old 3640 with a channelised E1 WIC, which I run through a pair of NTUs back to back - the second NTU has 3 individual X21 interfaces on it, using different timeslots from the E1 (NTUs are New Zealand's version of a DSU/CSU). It works but I can only achieve 3 individual Frame-relay PVCs (cos the NTU will only fit 3 X21 interfaces).

Thanks

techkiwi,
The serial ports on the 2522 are DB60. I don't think you can get a DB60 to RJ45 cable unless you try to make one yourself, though I still don't think thats possible. The 2522 is excellent for a frame relay switch (I wish I had one). It comes with 8 serial ports. This means you can have up to 8 routers in your frame-relay cloud, or you can segment the router so that you have 2 x 4-device frame-relay clouds. So many options with this little guy.

jimmyzz,

I have an old Cisco 516-CS terminal server and need to ask your assistance. The 516-CS has 16 ports j1-j16; Do I used a console cable (roll over cable) to connect to each router's console port or aux port and is this the correct cable?

Thanks,
