Chatacter Counter

Not sure if this is CF function or not but I have a <cftextarea) input box and I need their to be a min of 1000 characters entered. Alongside that, I need a running counter of the chatacters as well the the user will know at a glance "without submitting" the number of characters that has been typed.

I found Several Javascripts but cant get none of them to work. Not sure the reason but think I got a built in text editor on the <cftextarea>
