Hi,
I've upgraded this computer (AMD k6-2 500mhz,10gig,128mb ram, Win 98se) to 40gig, 384ram, and Windows XP Pro. The system board (motherboard) is somehow not getting along with XP (everything is very very slow and choppy), and Compaq (the manufacture) doesn't have any XP driver updates, for the system board (I've emailed them and looked forever on thier site with no luck).

My question is will there be problems if I just junk the system board and get a new one, with a pentium 3 1ghz or athlon xp 1600? I know the problem is with the drivers for the system board, I've gotten every update for XP and drivers for the other hardware.
Also, I'm guesing I'll have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall XP if I go with it. Thanks [afro]

That should be fine, the Pentium III would mean all that lovely ram could be used, the XP1600+ would leave you making decisions about motherboard types (if you want to use your exsisting memory type, SDR) you wouldn't be getting the best from the XP processor.
There are a few Dual memory motherboards out there that give you the option use your SDRam now and go DDR at a later stage.
You will need a 300watt+ power supply for the XP as well.
You are correct in your asumption that you will indeed need to reinstall XP so all the correct generic board drivers are loaded. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!
