changing the default log in

When I first installed Windows 2k, I chose a default user between the two that were created to begin with. Now that I've created a new user, I want that user to be default. How do I change this? Thanks... Liam Morley

There's no such thing as a "default" user in Windows 2000 - by default it will remember the last person you logged in as. Heath

That information is incorrect. You can set the default username as well as the default domain name... you must edit the registry key that pertains to it...

Hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows NT\currentversion\winlogon ... once there, change the values for defaultusername and altdefaultusername... once done, reboot your machine and the username you specified will show in the logon box... not the last user that logged on...

You can do all of that and you will get the proper username, but as soon as you change the name on the login screen these locations are overwritten. Thus...the "default" user is the one that last logged in.

Have you seen something different, i.e. the name in the regkeys "sticks" regardless of last user logged in...? Heath

You can also set this in system/ network identification/network id and set the computer to assume the new user is the only one going to logon.

Liam - do you want the user to automatically login without a password at boot time, or do you want it to prompt for a password...? Perhaps I misunderstood your question, as I was speaking of a domain environment... Heath

I meant for automatic login.
