Changing NT account password on XP corrupts account

We have a test environment based on XP Pro in an NT pdc domain. On of our staff changed his NT password on the xp machine and his account became unusable. The IT guys had to create another account for him.

Any ideas on why this would happen, if in fact xp is a contributing factor, would be appreciated.
