Hello,
I have been trying to send a friend an executable file ( .exe extension) through Outlook Express and it will send fine but the recieving Outlook Express blocks the file. We are both running XP. When I was in school we used Microsoft Exchange for e-mail and we had the same problem .exe and .zip extensions and were told to change the file extension (rename the file) and tell the reciever to change it back when they save the attachment. I cannot seem to get rid of the .exe extension when renaming the file. I have gone through XP help and cannot find a solution.
Can anyone help? Thank-you in advance.

are you trying to change the extension before or after its attached to the email? it should work before you attach it, as we have the same probs and do this all the time.

I am trying to change it before. I am renaming the file to filename.dav and it will remain an exe. So the new file name is filename.dav.exe. Should just reneming work or is it just me?

First, you need to open up the file the .exe is in and go to Tools>Folder Options>View and uncheck "Hide file extensions of known file types." Then the .exe will show up when you look at the file and when you rename the file it will be File.dav, not file.dav.exe.

Ahhh....I think this may be due to the folder view in windows explorer. Go into my computer or windows explorer, choose tools->folder options. Then go to "view" tab.

Make sure "hide extensions for known file types" is UN-checked - then click OK. you should then be able to see the original filename as "filename.exe" instead of "filename"

That way, you can edit the extension directly.

If this isnt what you were seeing originally ("filename" vs. "filename.exe") then I'm not quite sure why thats happening. Let me know

Thank you very much, that was exactly what I needed to do. I was running in circles for a few moments there. It's funny how I forget the small details.
Thank you again

A much easier way, unless for some reason you can't change Outlook Express properties, would be for the person on the receiving end to choose Tools->Options->Security and uncheck the box that says "Do not allow attachements to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". This will allow you to see the attachment and save it to disk (or wherever). You can always check the box again when you're done.
