Changing Exchange Server from login script

Due to various reasons(!) we are having to merge two of our servers into one server. This means that the name of our email server will cease to exist. So.......<br>

I want to change the Exchange Server name in each user profile from the login script, unless there is a better way.<br>
<br>
Is there a value that can be changed in the Registry. Of course, this spans W95, W98 and NT4 PCs.<br>

If you migrate properly from one server to another and you are not using Outlook Express to attach to Exchange (not recommended anyway) it works automatically. Well, it did for me!

Well, we set up our new NT Server with Back Office and configured a new mail server with new name and so on. Then chucked everything off email and migrated all mailboxes and groups and so on over to the new server (there is a move mailbox option somewhere).<br>

You can drag and drop (I think) that does not work, also backing up from old server and restoring mailboxes from backup to new server I class as not doing it properly...<br>

You are telling me that if I just migrate the exchange server to a new exchange server with a different name, but with the same organisation, the clients(Outlook98) can find the new server without any changes having to be made to the clients Mail profile.<br>

I'm not saying I guarantee it will work, but as I recall we managed it but we did only have one mail server each time.<br>

Maybe I'm mistaken - but I don't recall going around to every machine making changes.

We recently migrated here as well. I'm not an Exchange expert, but I watched our parent co.s admin run a migration wizard on the new server. He had to migrate one mailbox at a time and it took all night but in the morning most clients found the new server. On the few that didn't, running the Outlook profile generator (pgen.exe) pointed them to the new server as well.

using exmerge between machines in the same site will not require you to amend the client profile. I have done this on 500+ users and thankfully didn't have to make any desktop visits!!!<br><br>If you created a client profile and entered a name of a valid server in the site, but not the one where the mailbox is based, the client will still hunt around and resolve the mailbox. phew!!!
