Hi,

I have 2003 office and when I go to change directories, specifically I click on the 'Look in' drop down box then both word and excel freeze.

I have heard of a problem like this in connection with norton but I'm not using that software.

If anyone knows a cure.. Thanks in advance.

It is usually because you have an invalid link in the list - such as a dead mapped drive, invalid network dirve, etc.

Hi,

I have exactely the same problem. If there are any invalid
drives how can I get rid of them. Any help would really be
appriciated.

All you need to do is open Windows Explorer and see what is set up. In a corporate environment, it is usually a legacy mapped drive that causes the problem. Othertimes it may be an invalid folder/directory or even hyperlink in the folder lists.

Thanks, but there are no problems within Explorer. All
drives and folders are vaild. But I can't change any
directory in any Office product. This is new and it worked
prefectly before the last MS update. Is it possible that
there is a problem?

Michael

Windows Update KB908531 is causing some problems of this nature. Try uninstalling it and see if it helps.

Enjoy,
Tony

Thanks to all,

I found the folder. It was quite hidden. Thanks again.

On Tuesday April 11, 2006, Microsoft pushed a security update MS06-015 (908531) ( that conflicted with many models of HP scanners, cameras and printers. These HP products rely on a software package called Share-to-web, which Microsoft's update conflicts with. Side-effects are severe, including program freezes, an inability to follow a link you type into Internet Explorer, include inability to open or save files in Office applications, inability to click the + sign while browsing My Documents or My Pictures.
The suggested fix is:
1) Log on to the computer with an account having administrator privileges
2) Launch Regedit from the Start...Run command line
3) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached
Right-click "Cached", point to New, click "DWORD Value", and then enter:
{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401
4) Set the Data of this value to 1
5) Close the Registry Editor
6) Reboot the computer
