I am using a server that has very limited space in the /tmp folder. Is there any way to change where sessions are stored, ie to /home/sessions or something like that?

Sure.
Edit php.ini to change the value of session.save_path.
This value can also be changed using ini_set() in PHP and using .htaccess files with Apache.
