New user of DW MX. Have created a table, and initially was able to select a specific colour for one of the cells or boxes. Centred some text in it, and added images and text to other boxes. All ok so far.

Now I want to go back and change the original background colour of one of the boxes. Highlight appropriate cell, go down to "Properties" section at bottom of screen, and click on "Bg". Select new colour, but cell colour doesn't change.

Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong please...

You probably aren't selecting the right place.

If you split to code/design view, then put your mouse in the cell, at the bottom of the code window you will see tags e.g. <table><td><tr> Click on those and notice what is highlighted.

Of course, the other thing to do is to work in the HTML and then you will see exactly what the problem is.

Good luck

I'm sure you're right about not selecting the right place... But I'm unsure how to select it correctly! I know nothing of HMTL, and not sure I really want to get too involved for my probable fairly infrequent usage.

I can change the colour by going into the HTML stuff and manually typing in say, #FF0000 in place of what was there, but I don't seem to be able to change it with the mouse, which is what I want to do.

The particular line of HTML that's highlighted shows amongst a whole lot of other stuff:-

<td width=186 bgcolor="#FFFF99" style='width:139.5pt;background:#FF0000;padding: etc etc.

The "bgcolor" #FFFF99 is presumably the option that appears at the bottom of the screen under "Properties", but changing this makes no noticable difference to what appears on the screen. (I tried changing it from yellow to red!).

This job is going to be pretty long and boring if I have to manually go in and change all the background codes in HTML rather than just quick mouse click for all the cells I want in different colours.

I just hope there's an easy solution...

aha...it looks like your problem is that you have a mixture of styles and hard coding of the colour in the same tag.

Maybe someone else is more knowledgeable about which dominates, I think it is the CSS style.

My suggestion is to remove all the "style=" code. It looks like it isn't attached to a style sheet and while doing this might not be the best way to go, it will solve your problem.

You say you won't be doing this often, but even so, it is a good idea to get a basic understanding of HTML (it isn't that hard) and Style Sheets so you can solve thse things easily.

There are times when Dreamweaver is too smart for itself or you need to something and getting into the HTML is the only way to do it.

Ok thanks Steve, I understand what you're saying... I've seen references to "cannot find CSS file" or similar, but since the page appeared to display pretty much as I wanted it to, I didn't pursue it. Looks like I need to understand what "CSS" is, and get a basic knowledge of HTML.

Thanks for your help.
