SOrry for the dumb question guys, but on the Avaya is there a simple way to change an extension number?

Use the ASA and the option Swap stations or remove the station (write down the port) and add a new one.

What is the latest version of ASA, I currently have R1.9.06 from 2001. Can later versions be downloaded from Avaya?

I believe you have to purchase the newer versions of ASA. You could always remove the old extension and add the new extension. Besure to note the "port" the old extension was on and use that port for the new extension.

You don't need the newer version of ASA. Log into the switch and do 'duplicate station x' where x is the extension number that you want to change. On the form enter the new extension number and make the port 'x'. Use the same name that you currently have. This will copy all of the station translations except the port and the extension number. Remove the old station making note of the port number. Do a 'change station y' on the new station and give it the port from the old station.

Ahh you guys rock!
